ACTIVITIES

WJC had co-sponsored the Ahimsa Year Conference held in New Jersey on 13/14th April 2002 initiated by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, New York branch and JAlNA of USA. Shri Pratap Bhogilal had occasion to participate in it also. This conference was very well attended by over 1500 people. Since then Shri Pratap Bhogilal has visited Los Angeles, Chicago, New York,London where he met a number of friends with whom he discussed the formation of WJC and all of them were very happy that such an organization had been formed and promised their support in all possible ways.

On 28th April 2002, a first Interfaith Seminar was held on 'Relevance of Bhagwan Mahavir & His Teachings in Today's Environment’ on the conclusion of the celebrations of the 2600th Janma Kalyanakof Bhagwan Mahavlr in Mumbai on 25th April 2002. The eminent speakers were Munivarya Prakhar Pravachankar Shri Vimal Sagar Maharaj Saheb, Padma Shree Muzaffar Hussein and Pujya Shri Gyanpriya Swamiji.

On 2nd October 2002 (Gandhi Jayanti day) Kshamapana-Sadbhavana (Forgiveness-good will) celebration cum interfaith, seminar was held at Birla Matushri Sabhagrih in Mumbai. The function was very successful and was well" attended with almost 1000 people present even though on Gandhi Jayanti day numerous functions are held in the City. This function was sponsored by Bank of Baroda. Shri Arun Gujarati, Speaker of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly was Chief Guest and Dr. Mohanbhai I. Patel, Ex—Sheriff of Mumbai, was guest of honour. The Eminent speakers from diverse faiths included. Pujya Acharya Dharmadhurandhar Surishwarji, Acharya Chandana Shriji — Jain seers, Dr. Rafiq Zakaria(Islam), Mr. Solomon Sopher (Judaism), Bishop Thomas -Dabre, Bishop of Vasai(Christianity),Shri Gautamji (Vedic Philosophy) and Prof. Anil Sarval (Baha'i).

A book titled" “KSHAMAPANA SADBHAVANA" containing the views of the speakers expressed on the subject of Ahimsa (non-violence) Anekant (Multifaceted view of Reality)and Aparigraha (restraint in consumption & accumulation) at the Seminar on 2nd October,2002 was launched in the presence of Trustees, Governing Council Members and invitees of WJC ON 18th January, 2003.

WJC also circulated its Newsletter “AHlMSA WORLD” to report its developments.

Interfaith Conferences and Seminars are consequently held on 2nd October every year to commemorate the birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi who was a staunch believer of Ahimsa. Eminent leaders from various faiths address the audience. The Theme of the Seminars held every year and the speakers for the same are given in Appendix.

JAINA, USA held its biennial convention at Cincinnati from 3-6 July, 2003 which was addressed by Shri Pratap Bhogilal and Dr. N.P. Jain. WJC arranged for a booth where profiles of WJC and its publications “Kshamapana and Sadbhavana” and “Ahimsaworld” were distributed.

WJC organized a function to celebrate 'Ahimsa Day‘ in the House of Commons in London,UK. Jointly with the Institute of Jainology, London on 14th October 2003 The host of the conference was British MP Mr. Stephen Pound - Chairman of Labor Friends of India. It was attended by MPs, both Labor and Conservative. The High Commissioner of India to the UK, H.E. Mr. Ronen Sen was the Chief Guest. Five sets of the following 9 books were presented to the host viz. the Labor MP, the Conservative MP, to the Libraries of the House of Commons and the House of Lords and also to the Indian High Commission:

World Jain Confederation (WJC) celebrated Bhagwan Mahavir Janm Kalyanak Utsav on 30th March, 2014 at Savarkar Auditorium, Dadar by organising a Seminar on “Total Social Development through Jainism”.

Padma Bhushan Shri D.R. Mehta, Founder and Patron of Mahavir Vikalang Sahayata Samiti (Jaipur Foot) was the Chief Guest. Other speakers included Dr. Ved Pratap Vedic, Chairman – Bharatiya Bhasha Sammelan and Dr. Priyadarshana Jain, Head of the Department of Jainology at Madras University.

The speakers emphasized the need to follow Jainism to overcome current universal violence, poverty and other malaise in the Society as Jain Religion and teachings of Bhagwan Mahavir can easily resolve problems of Environment, universal brotherhood and stresses of modern materialistic world.

World Jain Confederation (WJC) organised a Interfaith Seminar on 2nd October 2014 at Birla Hall, Mumbai on “Ahimsa Hi Prem, Prem Hi Ahimsa”.

Shri Jitendra Kothari, Secretary General gave tribute to our most lovable late Shri PratapBhogilal. He said that, since last 12 years WJC organizing Interfaith Seminar which was introduced by Shri Pratap Bhogilal, Chairman Emeritus and Founder member and this program is dedicated to him. He said that he was associated with Sh. Pratap Bhogilal from the formation of WJC.

He was very Straight forward, Man of Principal and was completely dedicated to any work he started. Due to his ill health he retired as chairman but always supported till his last breath to WJC as Chairman emeritus. He always tried for the unity of different faith and any time Sadhu or Sadhvi were harassed, he wrote to Chief Minister, Police and Jain Association. We assure that we will follow his steps for unity in different faith with your support.

This occasion was specially blessed by most revered P. P. Rajyashsuriswarji Maharaj Saheb. Shri Raj Purohit gave special appearance to our seminar. The program started with lighting of the Lamp and Bhakti Sangeet. The Blind Childrens of Victoria Memorial School was also performed the sangeet in this occasion.

WJC celebrated Bhagwan Mahavir Janm Kalyanak Utsav by sponsoring Drama “Seth Motisha” on 19th April, Sunday 2015 at Shri Bhaidas Maganlal Sabhagruh, Vile Parle, Mumbai.

Jain religion cares not only for human beings but even for mute animals, especially ones which cannot fend for themselves. Cattle homes are set up for disabled animals where they are provided fodder and are looked after. When one thinks of such cattle-homes, he inevitably remembers the name of Sheth Motisha. Motichand, son of Sheth Amichand of Cambay, was businessman and had flourishing shipping business. He spent, as much as he earned, on charities and on philanthropic activities. In Mumbai, dogs were cruelly killed during British Rule. Motisha persuaded governor to put an end to cruelty to dogs. He, at that time, felt the need to provide protection homes for animals and the foundation stone for such a cattle home was laid. In Byclla in Mumbai, he built a temple of Bhagwan Rishabhdev for the benefit of pilgrims of Mumbai, who could not take long painful journey in those days. He started to construct a temple at famous Shatrunjaya Tirth which was completed by his wife Diwaliben after his death. He helped in building famous Godiji Parshwanath temple at Mumbai and many other projects at various places. Motisha’s name has become a byword for philanthropy, charity, compassion, devotion and selfless service.

The flagship program of WJC, The Inter-faith Seminar was held on 2nd October 2017, Monday at Shri Bhaidas Maganlal Sabhagriha, Next to Mitthibai Collage, Juhu Scheme, Vile Parle (W), Mumbai in the auspicious presence of Most Revered Jain Muni P.P. Shri Nay PadmaSagar ji Maharaj Saheb.The theme of the seminar was ‘“Non Violence, Peace and Compassion: The Foundation of World.Shri Arun R. Mehta welcomed all the guests.Dr. Bipin Doshi emphasized the need for non-violence in the present time.

The following were the speakers:

Dr. Ramjan Hasaniya was one of the speakers from Kutch. He exhorted for pious life and follow up of Jain principles for wellbeing of entire universe which is facing unprecedented calamities everywhere. He explained that all the religion teach about nonviolence. Jain religion teaches that we should not hurt anybody with mind, speech or physical act (Man, Vachan and Kaya). We should adopt nonviolence in our day to day life for peace in the world.

Pujya Gyan Vatsal Swami (BAPS) specially flew from Vadodara, Gujarat to grace this function. He said how the world was impressed with the Gandhiji’s Ahimsa. He said that if the world stops the expenses over violent weapons then there will be peace in the world and free education, medical help can we given to the society.

Naypadma Sagar Maharaj said that all the Jains and Jain organizations of the world should unite and spread the message of the basic tenets Ahimsa, Anekant and Aparigrah to the world. He said that Jain Society should make efforts for celebration of ‘Kshamapana Day’ in the whole world.
